Sydney to Wollongong by Train: How to Get There

A practical guide to catching the train from Sydney to Wollongong, including tickets, airport connections, luggage and arrival tips.

How do you get to Wollongong from Sydney by train?

Catch a South Coast Line train from Sydney Central to Wollongong Station. Direct services are available, with the trip generally taking around 90 minutes to two hours, depending on the service. Check Transport for NSW’s Trip Planner for your travel date rather than relying on a fixed departure time.

You don’t need a car for the journey between the two cities. The main thing to organise separately is the final leg from Wollongong Station to your accommodation, particularly if you’re arriving with luggage.

Choose the right service and check for trackwork

Enter “Central Station” and “Wollongong Station” in the official Trip Planner. Check the destination, stopping pattern and whether a change is required. Not every South Coast Line service makes the same stops, so follow the journey details rather than boarding solely because the line name looks right.

Check again shortly before travelling for trackwork, replacement buses and service changes. If you’re visiting for a wedding or another time-sensitive commitment, allow a generous buffer instead of choosing a train that arrives just before you need to be there.

For a day trip, look up your return journey before leaving Sydney. It’s easier to plan dinner and the trip back to the station when you already know your evening options.

Tickets and connections from Sydney Airport

You can pay for eligible train journeys using an Opal card or an accepted contactless card or device. Tap on at the start and tap off at the end, using the same card or device each time. Each traveller needs their own payment method; check Transport for NSW for current fares and concession rules.

If you’re coming from Sydney Airport, a common route is to catch an airport train towards Wolli Creek, then change to a South Coast Line service for Wollongong. Use the Trip Planner with your actual airport station and arrival time to confirm the connection.

Airport station access fees generally apply when using the Domestic or International airport stations. Check the current fare information before travelling, and allow time after landing for baggage collection and reaching the platform.

Getting from Wollongong Station to your stay

Wollongong Station is west of the main city-centre shopping area. Some central destinations are walkable, but the waterfront is farther away, and a walk that looks manageable on a map can be less appealing with suitcases or in wet weather.

Check the exact address of your accommodation before deciding between walking, a local bus, a taxi or a rideshare. Don’t assume Wollongong Station is automatically the best stop for every Illawarra address; accommodation in another suburb may be better reached via a different station.

Travelling with luggage or a dog

Pack so you can manage your bags through stations and keep aisles and doorways clear onboard. If stairs or boarding are a concern, check the official accessibility information for your departure, interchange and arrival stations before choosing a route.

Travelling with your dog needs a different plan: ordinary pets are not permitted on NSW trains, even in a carrier. Assistance animals have separate provisions. Check Transport for NSW’s current animal travel rules, and arrange suitable road transport if you’re bringing a pet.

Make Gemstays your Wollongong base

Gemstays is a pet-friendly Wollongong holiday house sleeping six, with three bedrooms including a loft, two bathrooms, two lounges, air conditioning and a full kitchen. It’s a comfortable base for settling in after your journey and sharing a stay with family or friends.

Enquire directly about your dates and ask about the best way to reach the house from the station. If you’re bringing your dog, organise pet-friendly transport separately so the whole trip runs smoothly.
