Free Things to Do in Wollongong With Kids This Summer

Summer with the kids doesn't need a big budget. Morning swims, rock pools, sunset walks and more free fun on the Wollongong coast.

A loose plan and some sunscreen

Wollongong is one of the easiest places on the NSW coast to fill long summer days without spending much. Pack snacks and towels, let the kids pick the first stop, and the coast does the rest — whether you're local or driving down from Sydney or Canberra.

Morning swims and ocean pools

Start early before the heat and crowds. The calm water at Wollongong Harbour is great for little swimmers, and the free ocean pools along the coast — like the Continental Pool near City Beach and the famous pool at Austinmer — are perfect when the surf is up. Always swim between the flags on patrolled beaches.

Rock pools, lighthouses and pelicans

Explore the rocks around Flagstaff Point at low tide, spot the pelicans around the harbour, and walk out to the lighthouses. It's free, it's close, and kids love it.

Walks, rides and lookouts

Stroll or scoot the Blue Mile along the foreshore, ride the coastal cycleway north, or drive up to Mount Keira Lookout or Bald Hill at Stanwell Park to watch the hang gliders. Finish the day with a sunset walk along the beach.

Make Gemstays your summer base
